Are
Caiques Loud?

"I guess it all depends on what you call loud." ~ Betsy

"I
would caution against having particular expectations; each bird's
personality differs and your own family/flock dynamics will have
their impact as well. There are some general expectation with each
species of bird, but a lot of variation. Just like people, personalities
vary greatly." ~ Marilyn W.

"I
guess it all depends on what you call loud. Mine can be very loud. When
I just had one and she wanted attention she would get into this screaming
mode. You could hear her outside. When I got her a friend then it really
got loud. When one started in then the other followed. Now I have 3 and
it can get really bad. I don't think they are apartment birds if you have
to keep everything quite." ~ Betsy C.
"In
my opinion, one or two or more caiques, they are noisy. They just love
to have fun and making noise is fun. Believe it or not, I used to live
in a small condo with 2 caiques plus other birds and those caiques just
about ruined relationships with neighbors. We ended up moving out on 3/4
acre and they can just yell to their heart's content. But they are worth
the noise." ~ Pam
"I
have only one caique. He/she is almost 14 months old. His 'calm' voice
is not loud. He whistles, and talks in a moderate voice. However, if he
calls and I don't answer he screams and that can be piercing. It is just
his way of asking where 'everyone' is. He is better if I tell him I am
leaving the room.
At first, even his whistling seemed loud. But it is something you get
used to like a loud TV. And everyone loves the "little devils"
so wholeheartedly that a little noise is a small price to pay." ~Joy

"I
have two caiques and they are quiet most of the time. They spend most
of their time playing rather than yelling. Once in a while they will scream
a couple of times, especially when it's late and they're ready to go to
bed. They make a little bit of noise when they're squabbling, but it is
quite low in volume and not bothersome at all. Overall, I consider them
to be relatively quiet birds, although when they do scream it is fairly
loud." ~Darlene F.
I have
pretty much the same experience as Darlene. Cleo and Monte are not loud
together when they are playing. When all three of the fiddos are out (Cleo,
Monte, and our sun conure Gypsy) they can have their moments were they
are enjoying some loud vocalization. Other times they get loud is when
we are cooking dinner and they know it is almost done. But, for the most
part, in the big scheme of things, I think they are quiet. But when they
decide to really vocalize, which can be on a daily basis, it can be loud.
On the note of 2 being noisier than one... I have a different experience
than others. Cleo was noisier (not necessarily louder, just vocal more
often) before Monte came into the family. I think the noise level went
down when I started housing them together. So that may be a factor. ~

"Yo
Yo is an only bird, 6 years old. Our home is quiet, so she is quiet too.
She gets excited and vocal about the usual things: running water, loud
TV movies, vacuum, lawn mower, etc. When company comes over she gets very
flirtatious and chirpy and loud, but will bite anyone who comes close
enough; just protecting her territory. She's just delightful. Her sounds
are nothing like a macaw or cockatoo. But I think if your home was noisy,
a caique could be noisy too, just so you wouldn't forget he was around,
ya know?" ~ Ingrid
"They
can be very loud. Pandora only says a few phrases, one of them being "What's
the racket?!" It's usually her. My grey is much quieter - except
when he's copying her." ~ Pat B.
"Mine
is quiet sometimes, then when he discovers no one is in the room with
him it sounds like they are filming an episode of Tarzan in my living
room. They are loud. I can hear him while I cut the lawn." ~ Glen
H.
"Gaby,
our first caique, wasn't loud at all... however, the second one, Papaya,
is a mouthy little creature who likes to make noise. This encourages other
birds here to be loud as well so the noise threshold in our house went
up by quite a bit after Papaya joined us.
However, compared to macaws and cockatoos it is not loud at all. There
are some birds, like budgies, who are chatty and vocal most of the time...
caiques aren't like that. In fact, right now, everybirdie is pretty quiet.
One of the things that gets birds vocal here is activity; if the humans
are rushing around and doing things or talking on the phone, the birds
all tend to be noisier for a bit. Then tapers off and they're quiet again.
Papaya's noise is often a sweet little melodic whistle so not objectionable.
And whistling back some phrase to him reinforces his use of the musical
phrase. It is sort of a "where are you?"
I would caution against having particular expectations; each bird's personality
differs and your own family/flock dynamics will have their impact as well.
