GEORGE'S FUNNIES

George is the class clown at the ciaque mailing list. He is an absolute delight!! Below is a fine example of his wonderful humor.

The set up:
An article had been posted on the mailing list explaining how studies "suggests that budgies derive some of their sex appeal from the fluorescence of their feathers" (as reported in The Sexy Glow of Parrot Plumage). The site provides photos of budgies under white light, and then also under short-wavelength illumination. The second shot shows the fluorescence of the feathers and thus we are given insight into what parrots may be seeing in the ultra violet spectrum.

The e-mails:
George e-mailed this picture of Chirp to the Caique Mailing List. Chirp had been eating raspberries and you can see that he looks like a caique staring in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Click on the picture to see it full-size. This will allow you to see the pigment Ingrid is speaking of in the e-mail exchange.

Here is the e-mail exchange between Ingrid and George after he posted Chirp's raspberry picture.

Ingrid: Does Chirp have pigment around his eyes? It looks like he does in the raspberry pic & makes his eye look a different shape than round. It's very pretty.

George: Do you mean on the skin surrounding the eye, or on the eyeball? He does have a red ring around the perimeter of the eyeball, but that's ON the eyeball.

Ingrid: I meant on the skin around the eye ball. Looks like he has eye liner on.

George: Upon closer examination, I discovered that not only was Ingrid correct about Chirp's eye liner, but there is a whole lot more that wasn't initially obvious to the human eye. See attached photo, where I used a special mode on my digital camera that brings out colors that only parrots can perceive, and which are beyond the range of normal human vision.
